Let's start by saying how pleased we are to report a steady increase in turnover during 2010 against the previous year.

As a long-established manufacturer, VERCO has seen off numerous economic recessions and there is perhaps something in the adage that 'smooth seas don't make skilful sailors'!

While we acknowledge that we are still some way from the business levels which were being achieved in 2008, this year has seen sustained increases in our furniture sales with substantial orders secured from major banking sector brands including BNP Paribas and Royal Bank of Canada.

Joining these were; Invitrogen and The National Trust which, together with a beneficial education spend this year from London schools in Tower Hamlets, Barking and Dagenham and universities such as Queens University Belfast, Birmingham and University of East London to name but a few, has enabled our sales to continue to hold up well in the current climate.

We have enjoyed increasing furniture business across our entire furniture portfolio, spanning Corniche through Intuition to system furniture ranges such as DNA, Oblique and of course, Visual. Of these, we find DNA seems to have drawn the most interest, with customers appreciating the style, elegance and simple value for money that this programme offers at the higher end of the market.

This month's Case Study further instances DNA in application for financial services major, Gordon Brothers Europe.

Despite good seating successes from customers such as BT, Barclays Bank, Tower Hamlets, British Aerospace and several conference organisations, we have seen greater pressure on our seating division this year both from imports and from the volume orientated UK manufacturers.

While this development has translated into quieter seating sales over the past six months, we have been enjoying good success with new products, Breathe and Mesh in particular, reflecting increased awareness of the growing breadth...and depth of our seating portfolio.

You can read about the latest developments in our seating programmes in this issue, too.

As always, don’t forget - if you have news for us, do let us know by emailing vzine@verco.co.uk or by calling 01494 448000.

Check out the latest modular system for reception, breakout or meeting areas.

VERCO's Amoeba seating is complemented by personalised table elements such as this chessboard. Just the thing to keep competitive minds sharp!

Whether used along or in clusters, Amoeba components offer the flexibility to define spaces with understated elegance and style combined with a crisp aesthetic that not only utilises visitor areas intelligently but makes a powerful architectural statement in the process.

Single modular soft seating units on silver frames are available with various arm and back options as well as 60°, 90° and 180° upholstered link cushions with linking brackets, plus a single swivel modular soft seating unit with two arms, low back on a polished metal base.

Matching modular MFC or veneered coffee tables with a single shelf on silver frame bring practical and aesthetic value while the chessboard is a classy talking point, even if you don’t play!

Here's a modern take on a familiar soft seating classic: welcome to the Club.

Available in single, 2- and 3-seater settees with optional in-arm power modules, the design’s deep cushioning and smooth sophisticated lines proves Club is a Classic when it comes to comfort and sophistication.

One of VERCO Office Furniture's best received launches in recent years is the focus of a prestigious London installation through Advanced Interior Solutions.

DNA was selected by the High Wycombe-based interiors specialist as a core component in a fit-out of global advisory, restructuring and investment firm Gordon Brothers Europe's new second floor open plan and cellular offices and boardroom in London West End's prestigious Wigmore Street.

DNA offers a completely innovative solution for both collaborative and individual work with a clean, understated design proposition that makes storage the equal partner of desking.

Workstations can be free-standing, a free-address bench system, or combined with storage, letting the more open elements provide extra surfaces and screens, helping individual user areas be defined within the workstation naturally without any need for fabricating additional screens.

In addition to off-the-shelf elements from the DNA desking and storage range, VERCO supplied bespoke elements in white MFC together with executive desking in wood veneer stained to a Wenge finish.

The furniture contract included glass tables, while task and visitor seating requirements were met by models from VERCO’s Vibe and 2-Smart ranges.

Specialists in acquisitions and capital solutions, Gordon Brothers sought to move from their listed Georgian building to premises that would provide additional space and more efficient internal communication.

Advanced Interior Solutions advised on relocation to Wigmore Steet with accommodation across one floor, as opposed to the multi-floor configuration employed by Gordon Brothers at its existing premises.

The new building already benefited from a high quality Cat ‘A’ fit-out so the new office accommodation required some inspiring design to match this. Relocation also needed to coincide with a user rebranding to be a feature within the workplace interior design.

Gordon Brothers Europe expressed clear views on the style of furniture preferred and attention was paid to finer details such as cable management, and the use of corporate colours in flooring and wall coverings.

To maximise the efficiency of the space, executive offices were designed to double as small meeting rooms.

Gordon Brothers Europe CEO Alex Brick described the Advanced Interiors team project-managed by Laura Morgan as ‘exemplary’.

“They made the project as seamless as possible, from floor plans to office design, to furniture selection to project management and implementation,”

“We have had no end of compliments from our clients on our new offices and we feel we have a design that is versatile as it will be easy to adapt as our needs change in years to come, as well as meeting our needs now."

Refurbishment by the FM division of property outsourcing and investment specialist Telereal Trillion for call centres at BT's global innovation and development centre at Adastral Park incorporates further installations of VERCO workplace seating.

Adastral Park is BT's global innovation and development centre. From pioneering work in optical technologies to work in advanced software techniques and protocols, Adastral Park is recognised as one of the leading centres of technical innovation in the communication world.

BT is a long-standing user of VERCO furniture and the Park - a former RAF air base, now science campus near Ipswich - is enjoying a second phase installation comprising medium-back Ergoform task chairs with height-adjustable arms for workstations.

Working from inception with leading ergonomists, VERCO designed the chair to control pelvic rotation, automatically. In practice, the user’s spine is allowed to adopt its natural ‘S’ shaped curvature with the lumbar region curving inwards, rather than the lazy ‘C’ shape adopted when a person normally sits down.

Ergoform’s ergonomic qualities have been well recognised by specifiers and standards providers alike, the range awarded the FIRA Ergonomic Excellence Award.

Complementing these chairs are VERCO seating solutions for meeting and relaxing.

Training areas employ Sting stacking chairs: solid wire chrome sled frames take up little space, allowing light to travel freely whilst still being strong and durable.

Longer meetings and conferences are accommodated by medium back nesting armchairs from the Mix range: their comfortable contoured seats allow users to sit in comfort for longer periods.

Reception and breakout areas are treated to Simon Pengelly-designed Song ‘feature’ tub chairs on polished steel frames and Smile circular base chairs on memory return spindles. Both qualities bring a welcome consumerist touch to their surroundings with a cheeky retro feel.

From pioneering work in optical technologies and digital switching through to work in advanced software techniques and protocols, Adastral Park has become one of global telecoms leading centres of technical innovation, employing over 4,500 personnel.

Facilities upgrades including VERCO furniture are ongoing at the site, named after the Latin motto of the Royal Air Force - per ardua, ad astra: or ‘through adversity, to the stars’.

In keeping with the stellar theme of the site name, buildings are named after stars or constellations. Local landmark laboratory block, the Orion building is easily recognisable from the nearby A12 road, its 200ft. former radio tower (now named Pegasus Tower) dominating the skyline.
